Capture mksysb with VMcontrol from NIM Master
« on: November 08, 2013, 03:02:38 PM »
All,

Here is a little how-to on capturing your mksysb images to be used for deployments from VMcontrol.

1) SSH to the FSM using USERID
2) First find the OID of the NIM master repository by running - smcli lsrepos -ol

USERID@gvicfsm:~> smcli lsrepos -ol
gvicaixnim01
        Notifiable:true
        ClassName:com.ibm.usmi.datamodel.software.ImageRepository
        UniqueId:422c9b3a-4119-42fd-8593-32ff5a91ef73
        ImageRepositoryType:1
        ChangedDate:2013-11-08T09:48:57-05:00
        SourceTokens:{ 'NO_IR_DELETE' }
        DisplayName:gvicaixnim01
        CreatedDate:2013-11-08T08:29:31-05:00
        ImagingTool:DISCOVERY_NIM_REPOSITORY
        OID:613152
        Guid:E83E6685E0F23C969FE0BED292CE36E5
        ObjectType:ImageRepository
        DisplayNameSpecified:true
3) Then find the file path to your mksysb you wish to capture.
4) Then use the following command and modify with your information. Where -r is the repository OID and -F is the file path to the mksysb and -n is the new name given to the new image.

USERID@gvicfsm:~> smcli captureva -r 613152 -F repos:/export/nim/mksysbgvicaix53-01_Aug_15_2012_05:00:00.mksysb -n AIX53 -A "cpushare=2.1,memsize=4096"

If you have any issues please reply to this thread for troubleshooting.

We had issues with some characters in this command and also added the -v versbose flag.

USERID@gvicfsm:~> smcli captureva -v -r 1024967 -F repos://export/nim/mksysb/aix7 -n AIX71 -A "cpushare=2.1,memsize=4096"
Mon Nov 25 15:29:22 EST 2013  captureva Operation started.
Attempt to get capture object data from file repos://export/nim/mksysb/aix7
Update collection with user entered attributes.
Call captureFile function
Call capture command executed. Return code= 1,042,063
Mon Nov 25 15:30:18 EST 2013  captureva Operation took 55 seconds.

We now see new deployable images from VMcontrol that we captured from our NIM master.

I hate to post to an ancient thread, but....

How do I find the argument to the -F ?  Where the heck is that mksysb stored?

Eric,

Welcome to MyPureSupport!

Concerning your question we could have made this more clear my apologies. The -F in our specific example is the filespace on the NIM server that the mksysb lives. This command isn't pulling the mksysb to the FSM or anything fancy it is simply giving the FSM the information about where the mksysb is stored so that VMcontrol can deploy LPARs from it.

Make sense?

Thanks!
