Manage VMWARE
« on: August 27, 2014, 08:45:11 AM »
I was wondering if someone could explain how the FSM can manage my Vmware Environment?
I understand that you can use vmcontrol, but do you need to install agents on the vcenter server?
does the vcenter server need to live on a node within the chassis or can it be another node (rack server)?
thanks for your response.

Monraya,

Welcome to MyPureSupport!

Regarding your question. There's been some confusion in the way IBM represents VMcontrol. In my experience VMcontrol can do some things for VMware like put a host in maintenance mode and/or migrate VMs between hosts among some other features. These jobs can be scheduled as well as run in real-time. However, it is confusing in that it makes it appear as if agents need to be installed in ESXi, this is not the case and only applies to Power system visualization. For what you want you need to manage your vCenter server and it does not need to live within the PureFlex Chassis.

To do this perform the following:
1) Go to System Discovery then enter the IP address of your vCenter server.
2) Once found gain access by clicking on the 'No Access' link.
3) After access is gained, collect inventory on the vCenter server.

Once these steps are completed you should begin to see your ESXi hosts populate as virtual servers. If they do not, you may want to run inventory on the individual hosts as well.

Last thing is to ensure everything in your chassis is at the lastest code level especially the FSM.

Thanks!!

Hi,

I have a Flex System Enterprise Chassis which have 1 FSM and 3 Compute Node running ESXi 5.5u1. I had created a virtual machine running windows 2008 R2 on one of 3 Node and already install vCenter Server 5.5 on it. I can discover, access and inventory vCenter Server but after that I cannot see any ESXi host as well as virtual servers at all. Thus I had to run discover, access and inventory individual ESXi host but I had got an issue here that I can discover and access to these ESXi host OK as if I enable SSH service on them. However the problem I want to fix is that I cannot run inventory on these ESXi host, the error message detail is as below. Please kindly hepl me!
